Rocky Mountain National Park is a popular destination for families seeking a memorable outdoor adventure. With its stunning vistas, abundant wildlife, and endless recreational opportunities, it’s no wonder why families flock to this area for a fun-filled vacation.
If you’re planning a family trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of activities that your kids will love. For an overview of kid-friendly activities inside the park, head over to THIS post.
When you or the kids are ready for a break or the park gets too busy, wander out to the gateway town, and read on for our top tips to find the family-friendly fun for kids in Estes Park, Colorado!
Activities for Kids in Estes Park
1. Trout Haven
Although fly fishing is on my “bucket list,” I’m not quite adept at the sport. I don’t like handling the bait, handling the fish, or waiting for the catch.
If you have family members who are like me and enjoy the idea of fishing more than the actual sport, Trout Haven is your solution! I have been going to this stocked, commercial fishing pond for decades.
It is located right outside of Rocky Mountain National Park, and, admittedly, their target audience is probably young children. However, if you want a fun, guaranteed catch and a dinner of pre-fileted rainbow trout, Trout Haven is your solution!
(Bonus tip: the pond turns into an ice skating rink during the winter months!)

2. Activities for Kids in Estes Park: Fun City
As you drive around the charming town of Estes Park, you are sure to notice the wavy, rainbow slide. Over the decades, this centerpiece has been surrounded with bumper cars, bumper boats, a race track, a bungee bounce, and an arcade.
It really does feel like a “Fun City,” and my kids love to spend a few hours there every time we visit Rocky Mountain. Be forewarned that as with any amusement facility, the budget seems to run out far before the kids’ energy does!

3. Souvenir Shopping (with Taffy, Candy, and Ice Cream!)
Elkhorn Avenue is the main drag through the town of Estes Park. The beautiful river walk runs parallel and behind the row of shops.
There are endless souvenir options, several dining options, and lots of sweet treats. There’s even a glass blowing shop!
We suggest visiting in the morning, as this retail area becomes crowded by afternoon.
For our Texan friends who can’t go a week without Mexican food, Ed’s Cantina on Elkhorn Avenue will scratch that itch.
4. Horseback Riding
Horseback riding is always a fun, family adventure. Whether you ride inside or outside of the Park, it will feel like a special treat to ride through the beautiful Rocky Mountains.
We book most of our rides through the Meeker Park Stables. They offer multiple tours based on your family’s needs and preferences.
Be sure to discuss the ages and abilities of your hiking party when booking your reservation. Also, do NOT ask for a horse named “Killer.” Ask me know I know!
5. Festivals
Everyone loves a celebration, and the town of Estes Park is all in on its FUN! Every year brings numerous festivals to town.
From the Wine Festival, Wool Festival, Fourth of July Festival, Winter Festival, to Elkfest and beyond, this town is always celebrating something!
While there are certainly adult-centered activities within these festivals, Estes Park is a family-friendly town. They are mindful of their audience and include numerous opportunities to engage kids in the celebratory spirit.
Vendors will often offer child-centered amusements such as face painting, pony rides, special treats, and other hands-on activities.
If you visit during a festival, expect to hear bands singing and see crowds dancing in the lawns outside of the visitor center. You cannot help but get caught up in the cheerful spirit of this vacation town!
6. Rooftop Rodeo
Every July, the town of Estes Park puts on a regional rodeo called the “Rooftop Rodeo.” Around opening day, they host a parade that winds down the center of Elkhorn Avenue.
There are horses, classic cars, and about a million patriotic flags! Viewers also wave flags from the curbs, and the entire experience feels absolutely ceremonial.
The signature event is held at the Fair Grounds. It can be a fun evening activity for the whole family to enjoy when you visit the Park.

7. The Stanley Hotel
The Stanley Hotel is the beautiful, iconic backdrop to many Estes Park images. The Stanley is best known as the inspiration for Stephen King’s film adaptation of The Shining.
Many believe that it is haunted, so the hotel does offer ghost tours. If that is not your jam, the hotel is still worth a visit.
It has a lovely swimming pool and a lovely dining room. It’s spa services are the best in town!
8. Tubing
If you’re visiting during the summer months and you don’t mind cool river temperatures, you may enjoy tubing. There are mutliple places to “put in” down in Lyons, Colorado, at the base of the mountain.
While this looks like fun, my Texas family anticipates that the water may be too cold for our bones; thus, it’s an adventure we have not yet explored.

9. Indoor Rock Climbing
Rock climbing is a popular activity in the park, but if you’re looking for some indoor or beginner climbs, consider the rock walls at the Estes Park Mountain Shop.
While we certianly encourage you to spend your time in Rocky Mountain National Park and not inside a building, afternoon storms are common. Sometimes you need a break from the weather.
We love exploring this outdoor gear shop, and our kids love the payoff of spending some time on their indoor climbing walls. Reservations are suggested during busy seasons.
10. White Water Rafting
While Rocky Mountain National Park has plenty of waterways, there is not an option for white water rafting inside of the park.
However, the beautiful Rockies are ripe with opportunities to enjoy these thrills if you’re willing to venture beyond the park just a bit. For more information on rafting options near Estes Park, visit Colorado Rafting.
