History of Cuyahoga Valley
Cuyahoga Valley National Park is located in the city of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The park was established in 1974 and covers an area of approximately 33,000 acres making it one of the smallest national parks in the country.
The history of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park dates back to the early 20th century when the Cuyahoga River was heavily polluted due to industrialization. In 1969, the river caught fire due to the high levels of pollution leading to widespread public outrage and calls for environmental reform.
In response, Congress passed the Clean Water Act in 1972, which led to the creation of the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area in 1974.
The area was designated as a national park in 2000 and has since become a popular destination for outdoor recreation including hiking, biking, and camping.
The park also preserves a unique cultural history, including historic farms, canal-era towns, and sites of early American industry. On our recent trip, one of our top highlights was learning all about the canal system from an historian in period costume!
Today, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a significant ecological and historical landmark in Ohio. It draws visitors from across the country to explore its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.

Ranger and Community Programming
Resting on the outskirts of the Cleveland metropolis, Cuyahoga Valley plays a special role in the community’s hearts. The area’s family values spill through this national park, and that includes top notch educational programming for all!
The park is full of daily, ranger programming suitable for all ages. They offer excursions, meditations, talks, hikes, and more! For such a small park, the schedule is packed with learning opportunities!
Cuyahoga Valley also hosts many community events such as farmers markets and even festivals. During peak summer season, this national park is a hopping, Cleveland hotspot for all ages!
Visitor Centers & Exhibits
The Boston Mill Visitor Center at Cuyahoga Valley National Park offers a wealth of information about the park, its history, and the surrounding area.
Children will love exploring the interactive exhibits and learning about the unique features of the park. Parents will appreciate the chance to plan their visit, learn about the best area activities, and pick up those junior ranger books!
Take the Towpath Trail to the Canal Exploration Center where families can learn about the mid-19th century’s Canal Era. It is full if history and offers many kid-friendly exhibits including a dress-up center and a digital canal example.
Brecksville Nature Center is a trailside museum that also offers frequent summer programming.
Visit the Hale Farm and Village which is home to 34 historic structures as well as hundreds of collectibles from the Western Reserve. This historic museum does charge admission for adults at $15 and children at $8.

Junior Ranger Day Camps
Every summer the Cuyahoga Valley Conservancy hosts several weeks of Junior Ranger Day Camps.
The mission is to educate and inspire our young conservationists. Children ages 6-12 are invited to their weekly, themed programs and outdoor activities. Registration is required.
Go Canalway Questing
Families will use special clues to navigate the park and identify quest boxes. Each box will offer a special stamp and a chance to sign the log book.
You can pick up printed quests at the visitor center.
Everett-Area All Ability Walks
The three interpretive walks in the Everett were created especially to accommodate all needs. Along these short walks, families can find fun and interactive exhibits.
It’s a great place to enjoy some light hiking for kids who think they don’t like to hike 😉
Visit the Farmer’s Market
Every summer, the Howe Meadows Farmers Market opens on Saturday mornings. It is a fun opportunity to explore some fresh foods within the boundaries of a national park!
Find some special treats and unroll a blanket for a lovely Saturday picnic in the Valley.
Explore the Waterfall
The most iconic features of Cuyahoga Valley National Park are its breathtaking waterfalls. There are several in the park including Brandywine Falls which is the most famous of them all.
Children will love exploring the waterfall and learning about the power of water and its impact on the surrounding environment. There are plenty of picnic areas around the waterfall, making it a perfect spot for a family picnic.

Go Fishing
Cuyahoga Valley National Park is home to a variety of fish species including smallmouth bass, sunfish, and catfish.
Fishing is a great way to bond with your family and enjoy the great outdoors. Children will love the thrill of catching their first fish, and parents will appreciate the opportunity to relax and take in the beauty of the park.

Ride the Train
The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway weaves through the national park and along the river banks. Riding along while searching for wildlife is a fun excursion sure to excite the entire family.
